Ijebu-Ode Diocese Joins the World to Celebrate the Elderly and Grandparents
By Rev. Fr. Anthony Adetayo
On Sunday, 28th July 2024, Ijebu-Ode Catholic Diocese celebrated the global event dedicated to the elderly and grandparents. This special day aimed to honour and recognize the contributions of older generations in the society. The entire Diocese participated in various activities to show appreciation for the elderly.
Holy Masses were held across different parishes in the Diocese. During these Masses, the elderly and grandparents were given the opportunity to serve, take readings and give speeches making the occasion even more meaningful for them. Their involvement in the service highlighted the important role they play in the community and in the Church.
In addition to the Holy Masses, members of the CYON (Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria) organized visits to the homes of the elderly. Young people took the time to share stories and experiences with them, fostering intergenerational connections that are vital for a harmonious society. Many visited their neighbors and family members, bringing joy and company to those who may often feel isolated.
Moreover, the youths assisted the elderly and grandparents with various chores around their homes. This act of kindness not only provided practical help but also reinforced the bonds between generations. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and sharing, as the youth listened to the valuable life lessons imparted by their elders.
Overall, the celebration was a resounding success, bringing the community together. The Ijebu-Ode Diocese effectively joined the world in honoring the elderly, making this day a memorable occasion for all involved. Through Masses, visits, and acts of service, the Diocese demonstrated its commitment to valuing and supporting the older members of the community.
