I AM THE ONLY CATHOLIC BISHOP WITH A CATHEDRAL BUT NOT A CATHEDRAL BUILDING… BISHOP ADESINA

By Rev. Fr. Anthony Adetayo

In an extraordinary display of unity and faith, thousands of Catholics came together to commemorate the occasion of the 55th anniversary of Ijebu-Ode Diocese, 5th anniversary of the beloved bishop’s Episcopal ordination and his 60th birthday anniversary that took place on 28th June 2024 at St Sebastian Catholic Cathedral Ijebu-Ode at 10:00am. The congregation was filled with emotion as they celebrated the impact and leadership of the bishop over the years. It was a momentous occasion that brought the community together in a powerful way.

The Bishop of the Diocese; Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina made an appeal for assistance in the cathedral. The Bishop highlighted the importance of the cathedral as a place of worship, community gathering, and source of spiritual life for the faithful in the Diocese. He emphasized the need for support from the community to ensure that the cathedral can continue to serve its purpose for generations to come.

Shortly before the end of the Holy Mass, the Bishop took to the stage; the atmosphere was electric with anticipation. His presence alone ushers in an aura to inspire those in attendance, many of whom had traveled far and wide to be a part of this significant event. The Bishop’s words were heartfelt and moving, as he spoke of the challenges and triumphs that had shaped his journey thus far.

The Bishop said “I was strongly advised to move this celebration to another venue for the comfort of our guests but I stubbornly rejected. I am sorry for any discomfort I may have unintentionally made you pass through. However, how would I ingeniously make you see that I am the only Catholic Bishop in Nigeria who has a Cathedral but does not have a Cathedral building” The Bishop called on everyone by saying “I am begging you in the Most Holy name of Jesus Christ, come to our aid in Ijebu-Ode Diocese. Join us in building this new Cathedral church in completing this befitting Catholic edifice in the heart of the Muslim dominated town of Ijebu-Ode.”

The construction of the cathedral is a significant project that requires both financial resources and labor. The Bishop called on individuals, businesses, and organizations to contribute whatever they can to help with the construction efforts.

In continuation the Bishop explains “Your support is crucial in building our Cathedral and ensuring that it remains a beacon of faith and hope for the community. Let us come together to make this vision a reality.”

His message was simple yet profound: “We must come together as one, united in our purpose and unwavering in our commitment to making a difference in the world.” The crowd listened in rapt attention, hanging on his every word. It was a day that would be remembered for years to come. The Bishop’s appeal for solidarity and purpose struck a chord with all those in attendance, leaving a lasting impact on the community. As they dispersed, the crowd carried with them a renewed sense of purpose and determination to make a difference in the world.
