BREAKING NEWS: POPE FRANCIS APPOINTS NIGERIAN ARCHBISHOP FORTUNATUS SECRETARY OF DICASTERY FOR EVANGELIZATION

The Dicastery for Evangelization is structurally presided over directly by the Roman Pontiff. Each of the two Sections is directed in his name and by his authority by a Pro-Prefect, who is assisted in accordance with the norms.

Today however, the Holy See Press office announced the appointment of Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu as new Secretary for the dicastery for evangelization in respect to the Section for First Evangelization and the New Particular Churches.

This dicastery is responsible for answering fundamental questions regarding evangelization in the world and for the establishment, assistance and support of new particular Churches (Praedicate Evangelium, 53)

It will be recalled that on 20th December 2021, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu was appointed the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations Office and Specialised Institutions in Geneva.

The Nigerian appointee was born on 10 May 1960, Archbishop Nwachukwu was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Umuahia, in Nigeria, on 17 June 1984, but later incardinated into Aba diocese in 1990. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI  appointed him as the Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua, and made him the Titular Archbishop of Acquaviva. He later served in the Antilles from 2017 as the Apostolic Nuncio to Trinidad and Tobago, as well as to Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, and Guyana.
