Bishop Emeritus Julius Babatunde Adelakun Passes Away at 91

The Catholic Diocese of Oyo mourns the loss of its revered shepherd, Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Julius Babatunde Adelakun, who passed away peacefully on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the age of 91. The diocese announced that Bishop Adelakun “returned to the Father” at 6:20 p.m.

A towering figure in the Nigerian Catholic Church, Bishop Adelakun leaves behind a profound legacy of dedicated service spanning decades.

Born on November 4, 1934, Bishop Adelakun committed his life to the service of God from a young age. He was ordained a Catholic priest on June 27, 1965. His episcopal ministry began when he was consecrated as a bishop on February 11, 1973.

For decades, he shepherded the Diocese of Oyo with unwavering dedication, overseeing its spiritual growth and development. His ministry is widely acknowledged as a testament to his faithful commitment to God, the Church, and humanity.

In a statement confirming the passing, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, the Bishop of Oyo, expressed deep gratitude to God for the life and impactful ministry of his predecessor. Bishop Badejo described Bishop Adelakun as a man who lived “a full, impactful life” and whose Christian witness “touched multitudes.”

The diocese acknowledged the immense contributions of the late Bishop Emeritus, recognizing the indelible mark he left on the faith community.

The Catholic Diocese of Oyo has called upon the faithful to offer prayers for the repose of his soul, asking God to grant him eternal rest and to comfort the multitude of people who mourn his departure.
