ARCHDIOCESE OF LAGOS MOURNS: VERY REV. MSGR. FRANCIS OGUNMODEDE PASSES ON.

Fr. Anthony Adetayo

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the passing of one of its senior clergymen, Very Rev. Msgr. Francis Ogunmodede. According to an official circular issued by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, the venerable monsignor died in the early hours of Friday, October 30, 2026. The Archdiocese expressed deep sorrow over the loss while affirming its strong faith in Christ and hope in the resurrection of the body.

Ordained to the priesthood on December 29, 1974, Msgr. Ogunmodede dedicated over five decades of his life to sacred ministry and academic formation. Throughout his long career, he held several key appointments within and outside the Archdiocese. His ministry included pastoral service at Holy Cross Cathedral in Lagos and educational roles at St. Theresa Minor Seminary and Ss. Peter and Paul Major Seminary in Bodija, Ibadan. He also served as the Pioneer Rector of the Seminary of All Saints in Uhiele, Ekpoma, Edo State, before serving as Parish Priest of Ss. Philip and James Catholic Church in Lekki and Dean and Episcopal Vicar of the Lekki Region. Prior to his death, he was residing at the St. John Mary Vianney Priests Residence in Maryland, Lagos.

In response to his transition, Archbishop Martins called on all priests, religious, and lay faithful across the Archdiocese to offer Masses and offer continuous prayers for the repose of Msgr. Ogunmodede’s soul and for the consolation of his family. Priests were particularly reminded of their obligation to celebrate Masses on his behalf. The Archdiocese noted that detailed funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
