The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) letter, titled “National Prayer Programme for Peaceful and Credible 2027 General Elections in Nigeria” and anchored on the scriptural theme “Let Justice and Peace Flow” (Amos 5:24), addresses several critical national concerns. Released in October 2026 and signed by CBCN President Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso and Secretary Bishop Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo, the letter emphasizes that recurring national issues such as electoral violence, vote-buying, rigging, and deep ethnic and religious divisions require a firm, collective commitment to justice, peace, and the common good.

A major focus of the letter is intercession for key national institutions. The bishops call on the faithful to pray specifically for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the judiciary, and security agencies, asking God to grant them wisdom and courage while freeing them from fear, compromise, and greed so they can uphold the rule of law. Furthermore, the document addresses political aspirants, urging them to campaign honestly, reject manipulation and financial inducement, respect the legitimate choice of the people, and prioritize national unity over personal ambitions.

The letter also challenges citizens to reawaken their sense of civic responsibility. It calls on Nigerians to actively fight against voter apathy, tribalism, corruption, and bribery, while summoning the courage to vote, protect their votes, and maintain peace without rancour or bloodshed.

Structurally, the CBCN outlines specific spiritual obligations for the entire country leading up to the 2027 polls:

Parish Days of Prayer and Fasting: Scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, Saturday, November 28, 2026, and Friday, January 15, 2027 (the eve of the elections). These days involve fasting (until noon, 6:00 p.m., or according to personal health), Holy Mass, the recitation of the official CBCN election prayer, and Rosary processions where possible.

Diocesan Day of Prayer: Set for Tuesday, December 8, 2026 (the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary). Dioceses nationwide are instructed to gather clergy, religious, and laity for a 3:00 p.m. Holy Mass presided over by the Diocesan Bishop. During this Mass, a major upcoming CBCN pastoral letter titled “2027 Elections: Call to Responsible Choice and Action” will be officially read. This is followed by a Rosary procession to the cathedral and Eucharistic Benediction, with live media coverage coordinated alongside the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN).

Ultimately, the letter serves as both a spiritual blueprint and a moral wake-up call, designed to ensure that the 2027 general elections become a transparent, credible, and peaceful process that advances good governance and national dignity.
