The Holy See, through the Dicastery for Evangelization, has formally issued a response of high commendation and pastoral solidarity to the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria, following the evaluation of its 2026 Quinquennial Ad Limina Apostolorum Report. In an official letter signed by the Dicastery’s leadership on 13th May 2026, the Vatican expressed profound appreciation to the Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina, Bishop of Ijebu-Ode, praising the submission as a vivid witness to the faith rather than a mere administrative summary. The Holy See commended the diocese’s ten-year Pastoral Plan, highlighting its focus on primary evangelization, the steady growth of indigenous priestly vocations, and the dedicated service of the local clergy. Furthermore, the Vatican praised the diocese’s proactive commitment to interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence with Islamic communities and traditional authorities, alongside its extensive social outreach in healthcare and education.

Following its reception, the official papal correspondence was formally presented to the Presbyteral Council of the Diocese of Ijebu-Ode on June 30, 2026, by Very Rev. Fr. Patrick Balogun, with the contents of the letter being read directly to the assembly by Fr. Charles Soyege.

While celebrating these pastoral successes, the Dicastery also recognized the formidable socioeconomic and spiritual challenges facing the Nigerian diocese. The report acknowledged the severe financial constraints limiting rural infrastructure projects, the shortage of trained catechists, and the complex societal obstacles presented by syncretism, modern neo-paganism, prosperity-based sects, and marital instability. Assuring Bishop Adesina of its constant prayerful support and attentive consideration, the Vatican urged the local Church to maintain its zeal in catechetical renewal, family ministry, and the careful discernment of new religious communities.

The correspondence concluded with warm words of encouragement to the diocesan curia, consecrated religious, and lay faithful for their co-responsibility in the mission of evangelization. Addressing the seminarians directly, the Holy See exhorted them to prepare for sacred ministry with joy, humility, and fortitude, noting that the broader Church looks to them with great hope. Reaffirming the spiritual closeness of the Roman Pontiff, the Dicastery invoked divine grace and imparted the Holy Father’s Apostolic Blessing upon the entire clergy, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Ijebu-Ode.
