St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ogijo marked a significant milestone on Saturday, August 30, 2025, celebrating the 40th anniversary of its establishment by the Ijebu-Ode Diocese. The celebration, which began with a Holy Mass, brought together parishioners, clergy, and community members to reflect on four decades of growth and unwavering faith.

The parish priest and Dean of Ogijo deanery, Very Rev. Fr. Peter Ayanbadejo, expressed his excitement and gratitude, inviting the faithful to actively participate in the occasion. He described the anniversary as a profound blessing from God upon the parish and its parishioners. The Holy Mass was led by the Regional Episcopal Vicar of St. Gabriel Region, Very Rev. Fr. Jude-Marie Ezeigbo, and concelebrated by numerous other priests.

The central message of the day was delivered by Fr. Francis Afolabi OSJ, whose homily, titled “Gratitude, Faith, and the Journey Ahead,” drew inspiration from the Gospel of the ten lepers (Luke 17:11–19). The homilist emphasized that gratitude is the cornerstone of Christian life and paid tribute to the countless individuals who built the parish from its humble beginnings. He honored the “heroes of faith,” including founding families, missionaries, priests, and lay members who endured significant hardships, worshipping under trees and in unfinished buildings with unwavering commitment despite facing mockery and financial struggles.

The 40-year milestone was presented not as an end, but as a biblical moment for new beginnings. Fr. Afolabi challenged the community to prepare for the next 40 years by focusing on youth formation, family prayer, and evangelization. While acknowledging contemporary challenges such as youth disengagement from the Church and internal divisions, he reaffirmed that unity and faith would ultimately overcome these obstacles.

The homily concluded with a tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the parish’s patroness, reminding the faithful of her constant intercession. The hope was expressed that future generations will continue to build upon this legacy, ensuring the next 40 years are even more glorious.

Following the Mass, a reception was held, where the joyful atmosphere reflected the community’s conviction that the parish is attaining significant growth. This has been evidenced by the successful establishment of several outstations that have since become independent parishes, a testament to the community’s dedication and spiritual vitality. The celebration successfully captured a spirit of thankfulness for the past and hope for a unified and prosperous future.
