“Thank you for your patience even when you meet difficult patients”… Bishop Adesina to health workers in the Diocese
By Emmanuel Opeyemi Alao
Under a canopy of faith and compassion, the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode commemorated the World Day of the Sick on February 11th, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Eye Hospital, Ago-Iwoye. The event was a powerful testament to the Church’s unwavering commitment to caring for the sick and vulnerable, drawing together clergy, religious, healthcare professionals, patients, and members of the wider community.
The celebration was graced by the presence of Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina, Bishop of the Diocese, who, despite his own health challenges, made a point of attending, underscoring the importance of the occasion. Also present were Very Rev. Fr. Patrick Balogun, Episcopal Vicar of Divine Mercy Region, Very Rev. Fr. Christopher Ogunnupebi, Director of Health and Dean of Ijebu-Igbo Deanery, Rev. Fr. Anthony Abdulahi, Administrator of St. Mary’s Catholic Eye Hospital, Ago-Iwoye, along with a multitude of priests and religious from across the diocese. The atmosphere was one of reverence and solidarity, as those gathered sought solace, strength, and healing.
The heart of the celebration was the Holy Mass, during which Very Rev. Fr. Patrick Balogun delivered a poignant homily. He eloquently articulated the significance of the World Day of the Sick, not merely as a day of remembrance, but as a call to action. “This is a day,” he emphasized, “for prayer for the sick, for offering encouragement to those who are suffering, for expressing our gratitude to those who dedicate themselves to caring for the sick, and for reflecting on our own roles in showing compassion.”
Fr. Balogun’s homily resonated deeply with the congregation, weaving together themes of faith, service, and empathy. He urged everyone present to emulate the example of Christ, who tirelessly ministered to the sick and marginalized. “Christ’s life was a testament to compassion,” Fr. Balogun reminded the congregation. “He healed the sick, comforted the afflicted, and showed us the true meaning of love and service.”
Drawing inspiration from the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fr. Balogun highlighted her selfless act of visiting her cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant. “Mary didn’t hesitate to leave her own comfort to care for Elizabeth,” he explained. “This is the kind of compassion we are called to emulate. We should check up on one another, whether we are doctors, nurses, or simply fellow human beings. A simple visit, a kind word, a helping hand, these small gestures can make a world of difference to someone who is suffering.”
During the closing remarks, Bishop Adesina addressed the congregation. His presence was a powerful symbol of solidarity with the sick and a testament to his unwavering commitment to his flock. “I have come today,” Bishop Adesina began, “first and foremost, to say thank you to all of you, our dedicated health workers. I receive reports of your tireless work and the sacrifices you make, but I felt it was essential to be here in person to express my gratitude.”
Acknowledging the difficulty in coming by illness, he said “Whether you are Catholic or not, I am grateful to you. You bring God’s love to people through your service. You give your life, in a sense, through the sacrifices you make, the long hours you work, and the emotional toll you bear. I want to say thank you, especially for your patience when dealing with patients who may be difficult or demanding. You are giving life, hope, and support to all the sick people you encounter.”
Bishop Adesina’s words were a powerful affirmation of the invaluable role that healthcare workers play in society. He acknowledged the challenges they face, the emotional burdens they carry, and the sacrifices they make, emphasizing that their work is a true expression of God’s love in action. His heartfelt gratitude served as an encouragement and a source of strength for the healthcare professionals present.
The Mass continued with the blessing of water, a symbolic act of purification and healing, followed by the sprinkling of Holy water throughout the congregation and the hospital. Bishop Adesina and the priests present moved among the congregation, anointing those who were ill or infirm, offering prayers for their healing and comfort. For those unable to attend in person, representatives were anointed, ensuring that the sacrament reached all who needed it. The anointing was a powerful expression of the Church’s care and concern for the sick, offering them spiritual solace and the hope of healing.
As the Mass concluded, Rev. Fr. Anthony Abdulahi offered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who had contributed to the success of the celebration. He thanked Bishop Adesina for his presence and his inspiring words, Fr. Balogun for his moving homily, the healthcare workers for their dedication, and the parishioners for their participation.
The celebration of the World Day of the Sick did not end with the Mass. In a tangible demonstration of their commitment to caring for the sick, the Health Department of the Diocese organized a free medical outreach following the Mass. Hundreds of people from the community, regardless of their religious affiliation, availed themselves of the opportunity to receive medical attention. Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals volunteered their time and expertise, providing consultations, treatments, and medications to those in need.
The celebration of the World Day of the Sick at St. Mary’s Catholic Eye Hospital was a truly inspiring event. It was a day of prayer, reflection, and action, a day when the community came together to celebrate the gift of healing and to reaffirm their commitment to caring for those who are suffering. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy, and service, values that lie at the heart of the Christian faith. It was a day that will long be remembered by those who were present, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the transformative power of love.
