PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS TAKE A SPECIAL JOURNEY TO IWOPIN MARIAN PILGRIMAGE

By Fr. Anthony Adetayo

The Priests and Religious of the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode successfully concluded their annual Marian Pilgrimage at the Ave Maria Pilgrimage Center in Iwopin. The two-day spiritual journey, which took place from Friday, November 15th to Saturday, November 16th, 2024, was a moment of intense prayer, reflection, and spiritual rejuvenation. It brought to an end the series of sodality Marian Pilgrimage of the Diocese of Ijebu-Ode.

The pilgrimage began with a rosary procession, followed by the crowning of the Marian statue. The participants also engaged in recollection, Lectio Divina, Marian talks, Praise & Worship, Exposition & Benediction, Sacramental confession, and Divine Mercy Prayer. The Holy Mass, which was celebrated at the beginning and end of the pilgrimage, was the highlight of the spiritual journey.

While the opening Mass was for the departed Priests and Religious that have graced the land of Ijebu-Ode Diocese with their ministry, the closing Mass was for thanksgiving to God and memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Fr. Reginald-Mario Isama, one of the speakers, gave a powerful reflection on Mary, the model of prayer. He shared personal testimonies about Marian interventions in his life, which inspired the participants to deepen their devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Sr. Joy Okonkwo OLA, another speaker, delivered a thought-provoking reflection on Mary: Our model of holiness. She explained the origin and necessity of holiness among Priests and Religious, highlighting its importance in their apostolates.

The annual Marian Pilgrimage is a significant event in the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, providing the Priests and Religious with a unique opportunity for spiritual rejuvenation and growth. This year’s pilgrimage was attended by over 150 participants, who were inspired by the reflections, prayers, and celebrations.

According to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina, “The annual Marian Pilgrimage is a vital aspect of our spiritual lives as Priests and Religious. It provides us with a moment of intense prayer, reflection, and spiritual liveliness, which enables us to deepen our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and emulate her virtues in our daily lives.” In his homily, he said “we have a transformative experience on the mountain to help us walk through the scandal of the cross. And when there is confusion, we can conquer it through prayer and fasting. This summarizes the theme of prayer and holiness.” The Bishop reiterates that this ministry can only be carried out by prayer and fasting. “We should shun showmanship in the liturgy or making ourselves the center of worship.” The Bishop thanked everyone for coming and appreciated all those who led in the liturgical functions.

The Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode is committed to promoting the spiritual growth and development of its Priests and Religious, and the annual Marian Pilgrimage is an integral part of this effort.
