THOUSANDS FLOCK TO IWOPIN FOR ANNUAL DIOCESAN MARIAN PILGRIMAGE

Fr. Anthony Adetayo

The Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode successfully hosted its Annual Diocesan Marian Pilgrimage on February 7-8, 2025, at the Ave Maria Pilgrimage Center in Iwopin. The two-day event, themed “Virgin Mary, Model of Prayer and Hope,” drew thousands of devotees from across the diocese, as well as non-Christians, including the traditional ruler of Iwopin town.

The pilgrimage kicked off with a rosary procession to the grotto from the town, followed by the crowning of the statue of Mary. The Opening Mass, presided by Fr. Sylvester Onasanya was highly attended, with attendees participating in praise and worship, sacramental confession, intercessory prayer, and blessing and anointing with oil.

The Marian talk was delivered by Fr. Simon Mayungbe. According to him, many people have lost hope in the Lord but God our creator promises us true hope. He said Mary displayed both prayerful attitude and hopeful attitude. All these took place through her song of Magnifcat, her Fiat, and her patient pondering of all in her heart. She proves to be a true model of hope.

In his remarks during the closing Mass, the Bishop of the Diocese; Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina appreciates the Priests, Consecrated Persons, Catechists, Knights & Ladies, and the entire Laity. He emphasized the significance of the pilgrimage and the importance of seeking God’s mercy. He declared the plenary indulgence for those who completed the requirements as prescribed for the Jubilee Year of Hope, having prayed for the intention of the Holy Father.

The Annual Diocesan Marian Pilgrimage has become a beloved tradition in the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, providing a platform for spiritual growth, renewal, and community building. This year’s event was no exception, with attendees expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to deepen their faith and connect with others.

As the pilgrimage came to a close, attendees departed with renewed hope and a sense of spiritual rejuvenation, carrying with them the memories of a truly unforgettable experience.
