FR. ANTHONY AKIWOWO IS LAID TO REST IN OKE ARE

St. Theresa Minor Seminary in Oke Are, Ibadan, was filled with solemnity and remembrance today, Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, as the entire Ibadan Archdiocese, alongside priests, religious, and a vast number of Christ’s faithful from across the Lagos and Ibadan Provinces, convened for the funeral Mass of the late Rev. Fr. Anthony Akiwowo. The Mass commenced at approximately 10:00 am, bringing together a large community to pay their final respects to a beloved member of the clergy.

Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Omolade, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Ìbàdàn was the chief celebrant at the Funeral as the Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin, who is the bereaved Bishop, was supported by the Bishop of Oyo Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, and the Archbishop Emeritus of Ibadan Archdiocese, Most Rev. Felix Alaba Job, highlighting the significant impact Fr. Akiwowo had on the wider Catholic community. Numerous other Bishops also showed their solidarity, with the Bishop of Ijebu-Ode, Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina, sending a heartfelt condolence message to Archbishop Abegunrin.

During the homily, Fr. Emmanuel Ogboli eloquently celebrated the life and legacy of Fr. Akiwowo. He offered a moving reflection on the life and times of Rev. Fr. Anthony Akiwowo. Fr. Ogboli painted a vivid picture of a man deeply rooted in his principles, unwavering in his commitment to his vocation, and remarkably generous in the offering of his time and talents. He emphasized Fr. Akiwowo’s significant contributions to his Parish apostolate, where he tirelessly served the spiritual needs of the faithful, and his invaluable work within the communications department of the Archdiocese, where his skills and dedication helped to spread the message of the Gospel and foster unity within the community. Fr. Ogboli’s words resonated deeply with the assembled congregation, evoking both sorrow for the loss and gratitude for the exemplary life Fr. Akiwowo lived.

Following the funeral Mass, the interment took place at the serene Priest burial ground situated within the Oke Are compound. This final act of committal provided a moment for quiet reflection and prayer as Fr. Akiwowo was laid to rest amongst his fellow priests.

The large turnout at the funeral Mass underscores the deep respect and affection held for Rev. Fr. Anthony Akiwowo within the Catholic community. His dedication and service will be fondly remembered by the many individuals whose lives he impacted throughout his priesthood. The event served as a powerful reminder of the unity and faith that binds the Militant Church, Suffering Church and the Triumphant Church. We pray that Fr. Akiwowo joins the Church in heaven to also intercede for us one day.
