In a historic moment for the Nigerian Catholic community, Fr. Gabriel Olanrewaju, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, personally presented his recent academic thesis to His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, at the Vatican.

The presentation took place on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, immediately following the Pope’s weekly General Audience in St. Peter’s Square.

Fr. Olanrewaju’s work directly addresses modern governance and accountability within the Church. His thesis is titled: “The Moral and Canonical Implications of Vos estis lux mundi for the Presbyterate of Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode.”

The study explores the local impact of Vos estis lux mundi (“You are the light of the world”), the groundbreaking papal decree issued by Pope Francis in 2019 (and revised in 2023) that established strict, universal procedures for reporting and addressing allegations of abuse and institutional misconduct within the Catholic Church. Fr. Olanrewaju’s research contextualizes these global laws specifically for the priests (presbyterate) serving in his home diocese of Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria.

The papal presentation marks the culmination of an intensive period of advanced study in Rome. Fr. Olanrewaju recently completed his Licentiate in Moral Theology at the prestigious Pontifical Alfonsian Academy (Accademia Alfonsiana), a world-renowned institute specializing in Catholic moral theology. Just weeks prior to meeting the Pontiff, on May 14, 2026, Fr. Olanrewaju successfully had his Lectio Coram, the formal, public oral defense required by pontifical universities before an academic panel.

The audience with the Pope underscores the ongoing efforts of African theologians to integrate global canonical standards into local pastoral realities. By examining the moral and legal expectations placed on priests in Ijebu-Ode, Father Olanrewaju’s research is expected to contribute significantly to ongoing formation, transparency, and child protection protocols within the Nigerian Church.
