Most Rev. Dr. Francis Obafemi Adesina, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, ordained three Seminarians to the Sacred Order of Deacons on Epiphany Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Kajola. The newly ordained Deacons, Revs. John Afolabi Ogunade, John Okwudili Ekechi, and Christian David Nwafor, were beaming with pride as they received the first stage of the sacrament of Holy Orders, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards priesthood.

Very Rev. Fr. Peter Onabamiro, in his homily expressed profound gratitude to Bishop Adesina for the opportunity to preach on this momentous occasion. He delved into the meaning of Epiphany, explaining that it originates from the Greek word “Epiphaneia”, signifying manifestation. Fr. Onabamiro drew parallels between the three wise men’s gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and the Bishop’s words, emphasizing the importance of giving one’s best to the Lord. He traced the Diaconate celebration to the sixth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. He advised them to be like the earliest deacons; to act with humility, be filled with the Holy spirit and be open to the wisdom of God.

Rev. Fr. Albert Osunlaja, Vocations Director, thanked the Bishop and all supporters of vocations, urging continued support for priestly and religious life. He encouraged the faithful to emulate the generosity of the Magi, offering their children and resources to serve the Lord.

In his address, Bishop Adesina expressed heartfelt appreciation to the families of the newly ordained Deacons, acknowledging their unwavering support and prayers. He challenged the faithful to go beyond mere expressions of joy, and instead, respond to the call to priesthood and religious life. The Bishop speaks to the people, “Love us with the love of Christ,” he implored, emphasizing the need for prayers for Priests and Religious to serve the Church.

The Bishop also announced the appointment of Very Rev. Fr. Patrick Kunle Balogun as the new Vicar General of the Diocese, entrusting him with the responsibility of guiding the clergy and faithful.
