In a significant boost to the liturgical ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu Ode, 55 new lectors were solemnly installed on Sunday, December 21, 2025. The installation ceremony took place during the Holy Mass at the St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, Odo Egbo, presided over by the Bishop of Ijebu-Ode Diocese, Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina. Concelebrating with him is the Diocesan Chaplain of Lectors’ Board; Rev. Fr. Alfred-Matthew Nworie.
The newly installed lectors represent a broad cross-section of the Diocese, drawn from 24 different parishes. This diverse group has undergone the necessary spiritual and practical preparation to take on one of the Church’s most ancient and vital roles.
During the rite of installation, Bishop Adesina emphasized the weight of the office, noting that these individuals are now formally entrusted with the sacred duty of proclaiming the Word of God within the liturgical assembly.
The installation marks a pivotal milestone in the liturgical life of the Diocese. As lectors, these 55 individuals are not merely readers, but ministers commissioned to:
- Proclaim the Sacred Scriptures during the Mass and other rites.
- Instruct the faithful in the faith to prepare them for the sacraments.
- Meditate deeply on the Word of God to live out the teachings they proclaim.
“The Word of God is living and active,” the ceremony highlighted, reminding the candidates that their ministry is essential to the spiritual nourishment of the Catholic community.
The atmosphere at St. Sebastian Cathedral was one of joy and reverence, attended by Priests, Religious sisters, and the lay faithful who came to support their parishioners. The event concludes a year of spiritual growth for the Diocese and sets a strong foundation for the coming liturgical year.
With these 55 new voices added to the ministry, the Diocese of Ijebu Ode continues to strengthen its mission of evangelization and liturgical excellence.
