Bishop Adesina Commemorates Sixth Episcopal Anniversary with Spiritual Pilgrimage to Jesus’ Galilee
by Fr. Anthony Adetayo
Marking his sixth year as the Bishop of the Ijebu-Ode Diocese, Most Rev. Francis Obafemi Adesina embarked on a profound spiritual journey to the Holy Land. Coinciding with the Easter season, this pilgrimage saw Bishop Adesina join numerous bishops and priests from across the globe for a retreat hosted by the Neo-Catechumenate at Domus Galilaeae in Galilee.
The pilgrimage which started on 22nd April 2025 shall end on 28th April 2025. The commemorative events commenced with a warm welcome and catechesis, culminating in a Holy Mass held in the Basilica of the Annunciation. This sacred space holds immense significance as the traditional site of the Angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary. Following the Mass, the visiting clergy had the opportunity to reflect on the Church and the believed home of the Holy Family – Saint Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. This site, revered as the place of Jesus’ early formation and the genesis of his earthly mission, offered a powerful connection to the foundational roots of Christianity.
Further enriching their spiritual experience, the bishops journeyed to the Place of the Primacy of Peter, a location commemorating Jesus’ reaffirmation of Peter’s leadership among the apostles. Their itinerary also included a visit to Capernaum, a town affectionately known as “the home of Jesus” due to his frequent returns for preaching and performing miracles. It was within this significant setting that Bishop Adesina celebrated the anniversary of his Episcopal ordination with a deeply meaningful Holy Eucharist.
Reflecting on this auspicious occasion, Bishop Adesina expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to commemorate his sixth Episcopal anniversary in such a sacred context. “On the occasion of my 6th Episcopal ordination anniversary,” he shared, “I am granted the grace to celebrate in the Holy Land with Bishops, Priests, and Laity from all over the world at the invitation of the Neo-Catechumenate of Domus Galilaeae.”
He further elaborated on the purpose of this Easter pilgrimage, highlighting its intention to assist bishops in “rediscovering the call of Peter entrusted to them as shepherd of Christ’s flock in their diocese.” By “tracing the paths of Jesus and his apostles,” Bishop Adesina emphasized the profound spiritual renewal and connection to the origins of their faith that this journey offered. He also recounted a visit to the Sea of Galilee and the specific location where Jesus posed the poignant question to Peter three times: “Do you love me?”
In closing, Bishop Adesina affirmed the deeply personal and spiritual impact of this pilgrimage. His journey serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring call to pastoral leadership and the importance of drawing strength and inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
