BREAKING! GEORGIA FINALLY BANS LGBTQ ACTIVITIES
By Fr. Anthony Adetayo
Georgia has taken a significant step against LGBTQ+ rights with its latest law passage on 17th day of September 2024, after a successful third reading at the parliament. The “On Family Values and Protection of Minors” bill, initiated by Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, has sparked controversy and concern among human rights advocates.
This law mirrors legislation recently passed in neighboring Russia and aims to restrict various aspects of LGBTQ+ life in Georgia. Some of the proposed changes include:
– Outlawing Alternative Marriage Unions: The law prohibits recognition of same-sex relationships, effectively banning same-sex marriage and civil unions.
– Restrictions on Adoption: The law prohibits adoption of minors by individuals who do not identify as heterosexual or do not conform to traditional gender norms .
– Ban on Gender Reassignment Surgery: The law prohibits surgical operations or medical interventions for gender reassignment for people of all ages.
– Restrictions on Media and Publishing: The law outlaws radio or television broadcasting of information, programs, or advertising that promotes LGBTQ+ relationships or identities.
– Ban on Public Displays of Pride: The law prohibits pride events and public displays of the rainbow pride flag.
Previously, some religious groups and individuals in Georgia opposed same-sex marriage, citing biblical teachings and traditional definitions of marriage. Key arguments included:
1. Biblical interpretation: Some Christians believe Scripture defines marriage as between a man and woman (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6).
2. Traditional family values: Many religious conservatives see marriage as a sacred institution, essential for family and societal stability.
3. Religious freedom: They argue that recognizing same-sex marriage infringes on their religious liberty to define marriage according to the correct beliefs.
